NFE has an immediate opening for a motivated Engineering Technician. Full-time and contract status will be considered. The position involves performing CADD services for a wide variety of surveying and civil engineering projects including, but not limited to:

  • Preparation of boundary and topographic surveys
  • Preparation of ALTA/ACSM Land Title Surveys
  • Preparation of Act 132 Surveys
  • Preparation of easement exhibits and sketches
  • Preparation of civil/site work drawings for both public and private development projects
  • Residential, commercial, industrial and institutional site planning
  • Site grading and storm drain design (including profiles)
  • Storm water management design

PROJECT ENGINEER/PROJECT MANAGER

NFE has an immediate opening for a talented, motivated, and career-oriented Project Engineer/Project Manager to design and supervise a wide variety of private and public sector projects within Michigan.

This position requires an ambitious self-directed, experienced engineer to design and supervise staff for completion of both private and municipal sector work. This position requires excellent communication skills, as well as the ability to manage personnel, project schedules and project budgets while maintaining client contact and client satisfaction.    

Education & Experience Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineer and Michigan Professional Engineer License
  • Minimum 5 to 10 of years practical private sector and public sector design experience
  • Minimum 2 years of project management and team supervision experience

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Preparation of civil engineering/site work design drawings and specifications for private sector land development projects for institutional, industrial, commercial and residential clients.
  • Preparation of municipal sector infrastructure projects, including roadway reconstruction and storm, sanitary and water main replacement projects for public sector clients.
  • Ability to lead and manage multi-disciplinary project teams, including coordination with project architects, MEP consultants, geo-technical consultants, landscape architects and other technical staff for project development and project delivery.
  • Ability to monitor construction activities while providing interim design support, as well as resolving design and construction related issues.
  • Ability to actively manage design, budget and owner requirements while scheduling multiple projects, as well as maintaining accurate project records, documentation and communications.
  • Proficiency with a wide range of computer software packages required for design and management, including MS Office Suite, AutoCAD Land Development Software and AutoCAD Civil 3D experience (manditory).
  • Proficiency in AASHTO, FHWA and MDOT design methodologies and local municipal site planning and engineering codes, requirements and community standards.
  • Willingness to participate in business development activities, including pursuing, scoping and bidding prospective projects. Ability to identify potential markets, potential project leads and company pursuits. Willingness to represent the firm in professional association functions and conferences.
  • Willingness to mentor staff and to foster strong working relationships with clients.  
  • Must have a positive attitude and enjoy solving problems. Must want varied experience.

SENIOR TESTING ENGINEER/CONSTRUCTION TECHNICIAN

NFE has an immediate opening(s) for an experienced, career oriented Senior Testing Engineer/Construction Technician to oversee a wide variety of private and public sector projects within Michigan.

This position requires a motivated self-directed individual to represent public sector interests, to oversee construction activities, and to supervise additional NFE staff for documentation and completion of private and municipal sector work. This position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to manage personnel, project schedules and project budgets while maintaining client contact and client satisfaction.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • High School Graduate. Associates Degree in Construction Operations, Testing or Field, preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 to 15 years private sector or public sector experience in construction/engineering/surveying. Construction experience of similar type and scope may be considered, if applicable.
  • Must have current or recent certifications for approved construction inspection program and/or MDOT certification(s) for concrete pavement, HMA pavement, density testing, MDEQ storm water operator, etc.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Represent Project Owner and NFE in a professional manner at all times.
  • Must have ability to read and interpret civil engineering/site work construction design drawings/specifications for municipal sector infrastructure improvement projects, including roadway resurfacing and reconstruction, as well as storm, sanitary, and water main improvement/replacement projects.
  • Must have ability to read and interpret civil engineering/site work construction design drawings/specifications for private sector land development projects for institutional, industrial, commercial and residential clients.
  • Ability to serve as lead Construction Observation Technician and manage/supervise junior construction observation technician on multiple projects in same geographical area.
  • Must be familiar with MDOT and local agency standards and specifications for road construction, water main, sanitary sewer, storm sewer and soil erosion control measures for typical construction.
  • Must understand typical methods of construction procedures and work with project owner, design engineer and site contractor to resolve minor issues and resolve concerns raised by public.
  • Ability to monitor construction activities and foresee potential issues with design support to prevent and/or resolve design and construction related issues.
  • Must prepare an Inspector’s Daily Report (IDR) and maintain accurate daily reports. Must measure and document quantities for project work on daily basis for preparation of monthly pay estimate. Must understand contract pay items and relate them to work being performed by contractor. Must document additional work outside of contract times including time and materials.
  • Perform, witness and interpret density, proctor, concrete testing and HMA bituminous materials. Must check materials to ensure compliance with approved shop drawings or specifications.
  • Witness final project tests, such as pressure, bacterial, purification, infiltration and TV inspections, as required by design documents.
  • Must follow and carry out specific instructions on independent basis. Must point out potential problems/conflicts to project engineer and contractor. Must inform project engineer of project process. Must document and resolve all inquiries and complaints of the public.  Must follow MIOSHA requirements.
  • Proficiency in AASHTO, FHWA and MDOT construction methodologies and local municipal codes.
  • Must be able to operate a level to check line and grade or calculation cut and fill elevations.
  • Must have a positive attitude and enjoy solving problems. Must want varied experience.

Other Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to perform quality control tests in field conditions at required intervals using ASTM, AASHTO and/or MDOT testing procedures per contract documents.
  • Ability to supervise junior level technicians and/or co-ops through knowledge of construction techniques and procedures for specified projects.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have experience with MDOT Fieldbook software. Must be capable of using this software for daily entry of observation notes, diagrams, photographs and other information required to document contractors progress and field activities.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a drive record in accordance with NFE policy.

INTERNSHIP – ENGINEERING

NFE is seeking motivated students for a Summer Internship Program. Interns will work full-time providing engineering support to Project Managers, and can expect to work in a variety of environments, performing both office and field work. The goal of the program is for students to gain real-world experience outside of the classroom. Interns will assume an administrative and engineering role to complete tasks often assigned to entry-level engineers. Desired skills include, but are not limited to:

  • Candidate should be pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering
  • Valid diver’s license and good driving record required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) required

INSTRUMENT PERSONS

Need entry-level land surveyors to perform all necessary field and office operations to successfully collect all field work for the development of boundary surveys, topographic surveys, ALTA/NSPS land title surveys, wetland surveys, Public Act 132 surveys, tree surveys, and construction staking for roadway, utility, and site improvements. Experience in topographic, boundary, ALTA and construction layout is helpful, but not required. Trimble/TDS experience is helpful, but not required. Surveyors perform a wide variety of public and private sector surveys throughout Michigan.
